Definition

a construal or information packaging of two events such that one event (the ground) serves as the reference point for the other event (the figure). Example: in Cindy quit after Jim was promoted, the two events are in a figure–ground packaging, such that Jim's being promoted serves as the reference point for the time of Cindy's quitting. This is an extension of the figure–ground construal beyond spatial relations. This information packaging is found in adverbial clause constructions. (Section 15.1.3)
