Definition

an object that, if its identity is known to speaker and hearer, allows for the identity of a related object to be known to the speaker and hearer. Example: 'knowing who Peter is we can identify Peter's bag, arm, brother' (Koptjevskaja-Tamm 2002:147) – i.e. Peter serves as the anchor for identifying the bag, arm, or brother. The anchoring function requires that the modifying - object concept denote an individual and not a type, and preferably a highly accessible individual. Another term used for 'anchor' is 'reference point', but the latter term has another use in this book. (Section 5.2.1)
