Definition
speech acts package the propositional content of the utterance in such a way that the speaker wants or requires an explicit response from the addressee with respect to the propositional content; and the constructions used to express this function. The speech acts that are most likely to be expressed as distinct constructions are the declarative, the interrogative, the imperative–hortative and its negative the prohibitive, and the exclamative.
