Definition
the subject and object phrases in a clause, generally considered to refer to the more central participants in an event. Example: in Sally threw the letter into the wastebasket, Sally and the letter are the core argument phrases; in The letter was thrown into the wastebasket, only the letter is a core argument phrase.
