Definition
an unspecified referent occurring in the standard of comparison in a comparative construction. Example: in The boy runs as fast as anyone in his class, anyone is a comparative pronoun expressing a hypothetical referent selected from the class representing the standard to which the boy's running is being compared. (Section 3.5)
